Specialty Care for Children

Care for Diabetes

If your child has been diagnosed with diabetes, our specialists can help. Our endocrinologists and other caregivers offer education, support and care for children and their families at the Helwig Health and Diabetes Center.

An endocrinologist and staff work closely to care for your child’s diabetes. They are specially educated to care for children with diabetes and collaborate with nurses, dietitians and a certified diabetes educator who develops a care plan for your child. This includes an insulin regimen, education for you to help care for your child and follow-up appointments with your child.

We work closely with nurses at schools throughout the Lehigh Valley so your child continues to receive the best care for his condition while at school.

We offer the following programs to help your child and you manage his diabetes:

  • Insulin pump classes to help children who use insulin pumps learn to regulate their blood sugar
  • Sugar Free Kids, a support group for children with diabetes
  • Camp Red Jacket, a free day camp for children ages 6-12 with type 1 diabetes
  • Games and other fun activities help children find answers to their questions about diabetes management
